Bị: Passive Voice & Negative Outcomes

The Vietnamese word "bị" (bi) can be translated into "to be (done)" in English. This translation captures the passive voice construction where the subject is affected by an action. For example:

Anh ta bị tai nạn. (He was involved in an accident.)
Cửa sổ bị vỡ. (The window was broken.)
Quyển sách này bị mất. (This book was lost.)

In these sentences, "bị" indicates that the subject (anh ta, cửa sổ, quyển sách này) is the receiver of the action rather than the doer, similar to how "to be (done)" is used in English to form passive voice constructions.

Both "bị" and "được" can be used to form passive constructions in Vietnamese. They both indicate that the subject is affected by an action rather than performing the action themselves.Difference:
  • "Bị" is often associated with negative or undesirable outcomes and implies a sense of passivity or helplessness. It is used to indicate that something happens to someone or something involuntarily.Example: Anh ta bị tai nạn (He had an accident).
  • "Được" is a more general passive construction and can be used for both positive and negative situations. It focuses on the result or outcome of the action rather than emphasizing the passive nature of the subject.Example: Anh ta được chọn để biểu diễn (He was chosen to perform).

In summary, while both "bi" (bị) and "được" can create passive constructions, "bi" is often used for negative events or outcomes, whereas "được" is more neutral and can be used in a wider range of contexts, including positive situations.

有例句:
"Bị" : This is used to indicate an action that happens to someone or something involuntarily, often implying a negative or undesirable outcome. It's commonly used in sentences where something bad or unfortunate occurs. For example:

Cái cửa sổ bị vỡ (The window was broken).

"Được": This is a more general passive construction and can be used for both positive and negative situations. It's used to indicate that someone or something is affected by an action, often with a focus on the result or outcome. For example:
Anh ta được chọn để biểu diễn (He was chosen to perform).
Quyển sách này được mua từ cửa hàng (This book was bought from the store).
Bị: Indicates an action happening involuntarily with a negative outcome.
Được: General passive construction used for both positive and negative situations, focusing on the result or outcome.
