The Arrest
Tommy Sells took the bloody knife with him when he left the trailer. He stopped outside to grab the two screens he'd removed from the windows, and then he drove further down Route 90, to the lake. On the bridge, he threw the screens as far as he could and listened until he heard them hit the water.
When he got home, he washed the blood from his hands, undressed, and crawled into his waterbed. He pleaded with Jessica to hold him that night, and she wrapped her arms around his body and held him tight until he drifted off to sleep.
He woke at noon. Jessica was already gone. He arranged to sell the truck, but he would need to wait until the credit union opened on Monday to get the money. He figured there was one more thing he had to do before he left town. He had to get back at Frances Cuzak, an attorney and federal public defender who'd made him angry.
A short time before, he'd met her son at a bar and gone with him to Frances' home. He'd used the phone all evening until she told him she needed to make some calls. Her attitude had offended him greatly, and he planned to kill her on Sunday night.
With his future settled in his mind, he walked over to the house of Sonny, the friend he'd seen at the bar the previous night. They drank beer and whiskey and used cocaine. He eventually staggered home from Sonny's, but an angry Jessica threw his clean clothes into the yard and told him not to come back until he was sober. She slammed the door and locked it. Sells went back to Sonny's home.
After he did, the sheriff set up surveillance of the trailer where he lived. Not wanting to make him aware of their presence, they stayed on the other side of the street. Ironically, Sonny's place was on the same side of the street where the officers had set up to watch Sells' home.
Sells got busy on the phone. He made a few threatening phone calls to his mother-in-law, Virginia Blanco. She called the sheriff's department to report these messages, and the deputies asked if they should move in and take Sells down. However, they were told to put Virginia up in a motel and park her car elsewhere.
A few hours later, Sells once again returned home. While he was still under the influence of alcohol and drugs, this time Jessica unlocked the door and let him inside. A deputy placed a call to the lead investigator, letting him know that a scream had been heard inside the trailer. Again, they were told not to go in. The reasoning was that if it was just one scream, someone might have just stubbed their toe – either that or their throat had been slit and they were already dead.
Unaware that the deputies were outside, Sells went to bed. He would later be woken up by the deputies with an arrest warrant.
