Xiangxi Corpse Driving is a mysterious legend and folk custom from the Xiangxi region in Hunan Province, China. According to the legend, specific rituals or spells can be used to "drive" the bodies of the deceased back to their hometown for burial. This tradition is primarily associated with the Miao and Tujia ethnic groups in Xiangxi, rooted in local sorcery, customs, and a unique view of death.

In the legend, a "corpse driver" (a sorcerer or Taoist priest) performs the ritual to make the dead "walk" during the night. The bodies are supposedly controlled by incantations or the sound of bells, guiding them along predetermined paths toward their hometowns. The process happens at night to avoid public attention, and the dead are said to move in a slow, jumping motion, with their feet barely touching the ground, creating an eerie scene.

There are various explanations for this legend. Some believe it originated due to the difficult terrain of the Xiangxi mountains, which made transporting bodies back to their hometowns for burial challenging. In ancient times, when transportation was limited, families needed a way to return the deceased for proper burial. Some suggest that "corpse driving" might have been a practical method of transporting the dead by disguising the process, possibly using bamboo poles to carry the body, making it appear as though the corpse was "walking."

However, from a modern scientific perspective, Xiangxi Corpse Driving is regarded as folklore without any factual basis. It reflects a mix of local superstitions, customs, religious beliefs, and cultural fear of death, common in the region's ghost and spirit worship.

Today, the legend of corpse driving is mostly a cultural symbol, appearing in literature, films, and tourism promotions, adding to the mystery of the Xiangxi area. However, it is no longer something considered a real or practiced phenomenon in contemporary society.
